While many dynamics are different for each family, the fact that every woman’s role at home is valuable remains the same. We’re shown over and over again in the Bible just how important wives and mothers are.

The virtuous wife in Proverbs 31 cared for her family and she was blessed and honored because of it. Abigail soothed David’s anger towards her husband Nabal in 1 Samuel 25 and in doing so she saved the lives of many. Mary was an unwed teen girl when she gave birth to a son in a culture that highly valued purity, and in her obedience to God she played a role in forever changing the world.

The Bible also shows us how a woman can tear her house down and bring harm and heartache to her family. Rebekah caused division amongst her sons when she encouraged Jacob to steal Esau’s blessing. The book of Proverbs compares a contentious wife to a continual, annoying drip on a rainy day, and shares that it is better to dwell in the wilderness or the corner of a housetop than it is to share a home with such a woman (Proverbs 21:9; 21:19; 25:24; 27:15).

We also know that Satan wants to break up the Christian family, and that he is seeking to devour us.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” I Peter 5:8-9, NKJV

On the surface, we may think we’re only dealing with a messy house or an uncooperative person, but ultimately any issues we face are outward signs that we are fighting an inward spiritual battle.

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:12-13, NKJV

This series, 8 Weeks of Intention: Embracing Your Role at Home isn’t only about home. It’s about embracing where God has placed us. It’s about working through common issues – clutter, messes, bad attitudes, burnout, etc. – so we can become more armed for war.

“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:14-18, NKJV
