Jonah – Chapter 3

Say “Yes” to God

Click here to watch this video on Youtube

As we step into Chapter 3 of Jonah, we find ourselves face to face with a prophet who, albeit reluctantly, has said “yes” to God. His message of repentance to the people of Nineveh was simple and straightforward, just eight words long. Yet, it was a powerful “yes” that opened the door for God’s redemptive work to unfold in incredible ways.

This theme of simple obedience echoes in Karissa’s message, “Just say ‘yes’ to God. I know that seems so simple, but He’s ready and willing to use a heart that is truly repentant and seeking His will.” Saying yes to God doesn’t require eloquence, grand plans, or extraordinary abilities; it simply calls for a heart willing to be used by Him. It’s a lesson that resonates deeply, reminding us that God can take our humble offerings and amplify them beyond our wildest imaginations. Think 5 loaves and 2 fish.

Now, let’s consider some seemingly small acts of service, and the potential impact our “yes” can have on others:

  • Taking care of children
  • Making soup for a sick person
  • Stacking chairs at church
  • Visiting elderly people
  • Hosting a Bible study in your home
  • Writing a letter of encouragement

These acts may seem small in the grand scheme of things, but when we look at them through the lens of God’s love, they take on new significance and we see how important they are.

  • Maybe writing a letter of encouragement is the lifeline someone needed to face another day or make a life-changing decision.
  • Maybe hosting a Bible study in your home is creating a sanctuary where people can open up about their struggles and find godly wisdom.
  • Maybe visiting elderly people is a chance for you to be a beacon of light and love in the last chapters of someone’s life, reminding them of God’s eternal promises.
  • Maybe stacking chairs at church leads to a transformative conversation with an unsaved church member, opening a door for God’s grace to enter their lives.
  • Maybe taking hot soup to a sick person warms their heart in a way it’s never been touched before, showcasing the tangible love of Christ.
  • Maybe taking care of your child is a lifelong ministry that raises them to bring others to Christ, passing on a legacy of faith to future generations.

Just as Jonah’s simple “yes” led to the redemption of a city, our small acts can become significant when offered up to God. Our simple “yes,” like Jonah’s, holds the promise of eternal impact, proving that with God, no act of obedience is ever too small to make a difference.

This Week’s Challenge

Say “yes” to one small act of service this week, whether it’s writing a letter to someone who needs encouragement, helping a neighbor, or spending quality time in prayer for someone. Afterward, spend a few moments in prayer, thanking God for the opportunity to serve and asking Him to use your “yes” in ways you can’t even imagine.
