Resisting the Urge to Come Down

It’s not just a guess—women really do tend to care about what others think. Studies show that nearly nine out of ten women compare themselves to others on social media. Whether it’s our appearance, our homes, our parenting, or our marriages, we often find ourselves looking over the fence, wondering how we measure up.

And it’s not just grown women who feel that pressure. Teen girls feel it too. A 2018 survey by Common Sense Media found that almost half of girls ages 13 to 17 said getting likes on their posts mattered to them, and more than a quarter admitted they feel bad if no one responds to their photos.

And that’s just online.

Off-screen, many of us carry a quiet pressure to explain ourselves, to be understood, or to fix how others see us. Maybe that’s why gossip cuts so deep. Maybe that’s why criticism keeps us up at night, replaying conversations in our heads. We get so caught up looking around, we forget to look up.

But here’s the truth—our value was never meant to be determined by others, but by who God says we are.

Fully known. Deeply loved. Held by grace.

Maybe that’s why Nehemiah chapter 6 matters so much. It gives us something to learn from, something to grow through, and a reminder that looking up is far more life-giving than looking around.

Nehemiah didn’t chase after approval. He didn’t run around putting out fires or trying to defend his reputation. He knew the work God gave him to do, and he stayed focused.

The enemy tried to pull him down—literally and figuratively. They sent message after message, hoping to wear him down and pull him away from his calling. But Nehemiah stood firm and simply replied, “I am doing a great work, and I cannot come down” (Nehemiah 6:3).

That kind of clarity is rare. Nehemiah didn’t explain himself. He didn’t try to win them over. He just kept going. And that’s a powerful example for us. How often do we step away from what God has called us to, just to fix a misunderstanding or ease someone’s disappointment?

Nehemiah’s response gives us the clarity we all need:

You don’t have to come down.
Not every voice deserves your energy.
Not every opinion needs a response.
Not every battle is yours to fight.

When you know who you are—and what God has called you to do—you can stay the course, even when others don’t understand.

A Note About Journaling
As you move through this study, consider keeping a personal journal nearby. It doesn’t have to be fancy—just a simple notebook where you can jot down your prayers, reflections, and anything the Lord impresses on your heart. This is your space to write freely, revisit lessons, and record your own journey of restoration.

This Week’s Challenge

This week, when you feel tempted to defend yourself, get pulled into drama, or react out of emotion, pause instead. Take a deep breath, pray, and remind yourself: “I am doing a great work, and I cannot come down.” Write this verse somewhere visible as a reminder to stay focused on what God has called you to do.
